An Impact Investing Portfolio in Public Equity

You will find an English version of the portfolio checklist at the bottom of this page.

- beleggen in Public equity.

1Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability

Secundaire checklist Bedrijfsvoering:
Missie, visie, strategie en tactiek(en), impact bewustzijn
Impact R&D, strategie en activiteiten (intern en extern)
Investor relations communicatie, CSR, Duurzaamheid Jaarverslagen,
In Duurzaamheidsindices (DJSI, Footsie4Good, Vigeo/NYSE, Global Compact, other …)

Tertiaire checklist
Benchmarks: transparantiebenchmark, CO2 water etc. prestaties
Internationale overheden (beleid, compliance, facilitering, stimulering) NGO's, Stakeholders signalen en de respons daarop

Private Equity: Impact & Return propositie(s)
Wat is de verantwoording door de prospect, impact sector, impact effect, impact return on investment, financiële return on investment, business model, strategie groei of waarde ....

Dilemma's

Good luck!

IMPACT INVESTING PORTFOLIO i.o.
Building a public equity impact investing strategy depends primarily on the investor's risk profile. You can start cautionsly with a few % of the portfolio for impact investing as an investment style(in line with a sustainable portfolio). There are fewer investment opportunities, because many sectors and companies are excluded, but the number of sectors which can be invested is wider than the impact focus of major private equity investors such as on microfinance , sustainable agriculture, etc. Also impact investing does not have to be a purely international activity in developing countries. The Netherlands and the Eurozone offer plenty of impact investing opportunities.

Investor's profile
This is an impact investing strategy (or checklist ) for:
- Small investors,
- Focused on fixed income and a bit of value,
- With a neutral investor profile (tests at bankwebsites),
- Currency risk minimizing; and
- Investing in Public Equity: spreading risk over bonds, equities, index trackers or exchange traded funds and mutual funds.
- Maybe even some private equity because crowdfundingplatfroms now offer small investors opportunities such as loans with risk analysis for start-ups and SMEs.

Thus the impact investments take place in type 3,4 & 5:

IMPACT INVESTING CHECKLIST
Impact investing is all about product and / or sector allocation ... so ask yourself: -1 –
Is the company (partly) active in an impactful area's? And -2 – Are the mission, vision, strategy and tactics focused on sustainability and impact?
For me sustainability is preventing or reducing harmful effects on humans and the environment by operating with a corporate social responsability policy applying Environment, Social and Governance standards. Think of reducing energy, water and (raw) materials, providing a safe workplace and development opportunities for employees and implementing (future) legislation as early and effectively as possible.

Popular sectors
The world's most popular sustainable / impact sectors are: Renewable energy, energy efficiency, saving and clearing water, waste recycling, Carbon emission reduction, health, other, agriculture, microfinance, forestry, green building and fair trade. Source: SRI magazine in 2013. Note that larger demand inspires more investment opprtunities.* Employment and income are essential: without work and income to spend impact services and products can not take off. The Netherlands now has 700,000 unemployed: work should be it's political and economic priority. The most succesfull impact investing category worldwide is investment in work and thus income through microcredit.
** LOHAS Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability

Secondary Operations checklist :A Companies Mission, vision, strategy, tactics and impact awareness;
Is there an Impact R&D strategy and activity (internal and external);
Is Impact part of the Investor relations communication, Corporate Social Resposnsibility (CSR) or Sustainability Report?
What is the CSR and (Impact) ESG policy, accountability practice, performance (in its sector) and score?
Is ESG implemented in the supply chain?
Is the company mentioned in Sustainability Indices? (DJSI, Footsie4Good, Vigeo/NYSE, Global Compact, other ...)
In the company listed in SRI funds (or ETF's?) at
www.sustainable-investment.org (Stock database) or duurzaam-beleggen.nl

More and more research is being done into ESG factors within this category. Sometimes this leads to suprises, see IINieuws 1mei14 (duurzame bedrijven controverisial top 10). Tip by the Blogger: google names of sustainable companies combined with accused, fine, lawsuit, corruption, fraude, money laundering, controversial, environment, deforestation, displacement, land grabbing, health etc. Thus you can see if companies are investigated, accused, in lawsuits, settlements or have been convicted for such behavior.

Of course statebonds are also impact investments  Note that states invest in defense i.e. weapons, but not in prohibited weapons. Robeco (SAM) and Korean SolAbility publish benchmarks of country's sustainability (IINieuws-15dec13).

Een recent exiting development is the explosive growth of the offering of green corporate bonds which is expected to continue this year. Check out MARKET in the 15maart14, 1april14 en 15april14 blogs.

Tertiary checklist
Is a compamy listed in benchmarks such as the : the (Dutch) Transparantiebenchmark, Carbon emmission performance, CO2benchmark/compare companies is it active in diminishing it's CorporateWaterFootprints etc.
Response to (inter)national policy appeals (compliance, facilitating, promotion) Response to NGOs and Stakeholders signals and appeals.
Private Equity : Impact and Return proposition ( s )Assuming the proposition is in an impact sector, does the prospect present impact aims and figures?, impact return on investment next to financial return on investment, impact integral part of the business model (strategy, growth or value..)

For American companies check out R.P. Herman website on Human Impact + Profit HIPinvestor or buy his book The HIP investors Make bigger profits by building a better world. Dutch summary on IINieuws-15nov2011

Dilemma
The ultimate dilemma of the impact investor is that the impact of sustainable companies can turn out negatively when compared to the effects of their business on a global scale.

Example: the automobileindustry is the biggest investor in clean tech with it's investments in electric cars. Transport & traffic cause 23% of CO² emmissions and the emissions keep growing.
Example: Like Mars company helping poor cocoa farmers and supporting a Symbioscience division for life science and mens health but as core business manufacturing sweets adding to the worlds obesity problems causing death, (chronic) disease and societal costs.

A smart investor spreads risks over funds and sectors which in my opinion means chosing impact sectors, best-in-class companies and index trackers or exchange traded funds (due to the wide spread and the low costs). They list large cap companies who are usually doing the most interesting things impactwise thus inspiring their competition to follow or even outperform them.
In an etf or mutualfund the impact effects of impactful companies are undermined by the overall effect of a sector or investment product. I guess only
Oikocredit en theme investmentfunds offered by TriodosBank, ASNBank and RobecoSAM offer (more) assurence the allover impact is positive.

How do I invest?

My portfolio in online (in Dutch sorry) mijn-portfolio-langs-de-impact-meetlat, with an explination why I think it is an impact investment and the impact level according tot the Impact Indicator© the-case-for-an-impact-indicator for investment products
I'll invest in impact sectors and high yield bonds of sustainble companies, international sustainability or sector ETFs and shares of Dutch best-in-class sustainable companies. I look at their impact activities, R&D and investments and divestments strategy (when possible, companies are not always transparant).
Later I TINA'd* and bougth more stocks and etf 's because I had bought the most interesting bonds in 2012 and sold them when the current yields rose above my coupon ambitions. Buying corporate bonds of (best-in-class) companies and/or in impact sectors turned out to be quite expensive or they had low ratings and green bonds have very high nominal value (100.000e).
I started a pennystock with impact portfolio at DeGiro as it has no management fees and very low (international) transactions costs. Somewhere during May-to-October I will invest in the companies that publish their impact report at the Social Stock Exchange in London, corporations mentioned in Trueprice/publications (qualtifies societal, environmental & human capital costs) and other companies I encounter during my research.*There Is No Alternative (than shares)

Tip: Oblis.be has a wonderfull overview of European corporate bonds and the current yield. (Note it is a Belgian platform, hence the coupon tax of 25%).
I do not invest in mutual funds because of the management fees and costs.

Good luck ! Investing involves risks, past performance is no guarantee for the future and good intentions such as impact investing goals are no guarentee against bad luck, bad judgement or black swans.

I own SNS bonds which I bought because the Dutch SNS bank has an Impact Investment Asset Management division. They were nationalized (!) in january 2013 and to date no compensation has been paid or agreed upon. Several legal procedures have been set in action. Fortunately a non profit was set up for small bond holders (sos-ns.com) and the Dutch stockholders association VEB is active for stockholder interests.
* There is no alternative (for stocks)
